Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
