In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
