Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
